I have an X reg Ford Focus that has recently had a new water pump fitted and full service. since I have had the car back I have noticed a pool of water under the passenger side of the engine and the radator coolant is low. I have taken it back to tha garage who cannot find a problem but since I have had it back the car is missfiring in low gears. I have taken it back again and water was found in the spark plugs. These have been replaced but the car is still missfiring. The garege does not seem to know what is going on. Any Ideas. Take a look at the aft side of the top of the radiator for a plastic coolant manifold, about 8 inches long if I recall right. That thing likes to split lengthwise and spray coolant on the engine. The crack is hard to see until the engine gets hot enough to spray - until then it is a hairline that blends in well. Replacement is simple enough but if you do it yourself be sure to get the replacement pins that hold it on the radiator. sounds like a seal in the engine is bad and it is letting coolant from the block into the combustion chamber thus getting coolant on your spark plugs and causing misfire due to it mixing with gas in chamber this would also explain why the coolant is low, it is being burned off as for leak the seal may be letting it out as well, or water pump was not put back on correctly Pretty dumb going back to the same garage repeatedly that wrecked your car in the first place. do you think that is wise? Subaru . How to Change the Back Brakes on a 2002 F-150Rear brakes on a 2002 Ford F150 consist of the brake pads, brake rotors and calipers. While the pads wear out every 20,000 to 60,000 miles, rotors often last two or three times longer. Calipers, if well maintained, can easily last the life of the truck. One key to long lasting brakes is purchasing quality replacement parts. When buying new brake pads or rotors, save yourself some aggravation later on and buy professional grade parts. Economy brakes may be marketed as a great thing, but in the long run, you'll save yourself time and money. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Things You'll Need Safety glasses Wheel chocks Lug wrench Floor jack 2 jack stands Catch pan Brake clean Socket set Needle nose pliers (optional) Replacement rotors (optional) Caliper piston tool Replacement pads White lithium grease Torque wrench Step by Step : 1 Chock the front wheels, put your safety glasses on and loosen the rear lug nuts using the lug wrench. 2 Jack the rear end of the F150 up high enough to place the two jack stands underneath the rear axle, on either side near the leaf springs. Lower the truck onto the jack stands once they are in position. 3 Remove the lug nuts and wheels by hand and move them off to the side. 4 Start on the left side and place the catch pan underneath the brake assembly. Spray the brake down thoroughly with brake clean, removing as much brake dust as possible. Be sure to spray into the calipers from all sides and all over the rotor and wheel studs. 5 Use the socket set to unbolt the caliper. Once it is unbolted, pull it off the rotor by hand and prop it on the leaf spring so the caliper does not hang from the brake line. Allowing it to hang from the brake line can damage the line and ultimately lead to a brake fluid leak and loss of brakes while driving. 6 Pull the rotor off by hand. If the rotor has never been removed in the past, there may be a small tin washer holding the rotor to one wheel stud. Simply pry it off with the needle nose pliers and discard it. The washer is put on at the factory to hold the rotor in place while the truck rolls down the assembly line. Once the rotors are off, either have them resurfaced at a local machine shop or replace them. 7 Pry the retaining clip off the back of the rotors and remove the old brake pads by hand. 8 Clean the caliper slides with brake clean and lubricate them with white lithium grease. 9 Push the caliper pistons back into the caliper with the caliper piston tool. Once the pistons are recessed into the caliper, place the replacement brake pads into the caliper and reinstall the retaining clip. Step by Step : 10 Place the rotor, whether new or resurfaced, back onto the axle by hand. Slide the caliper back into place and reinstall the caliper bolts. Step by Step : 11 Repeat steps four through 10 on the opposite side. Reinstall the wheels and lug nuts. Lower the truck back onto the ground and then tighten the lug nuts to 100 lbs/ft with the torque wrench.
Subaru . How to Change Brake Rotors at the Same Time As Brake PadsBrake pads and brake rotors are the two most important components of an anti-lock braking system. The function of the brake pads is completely reliant upon the condition of the braking rotors and vice-versa. When changing brake pads, it is wise to also inspect the braking rotors. Rotors that are scored beyond repair or warped require replacement. Brake pads need to be replaced when the wear indicators connected to the pads begin to make contact with the rotors. It is not only possible to change the brake rotors at the same time as the brake pads, it is recommended. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Things You'll Need Tire iron Tire blocks Lifting jack Jack stands Flat head screwdriver (optional) 13 mm wrench 10 mm wrench Hammer (optional) Chain lubricant Brake cleaner spray New rotor New brake pads C-clamp Shop ragReplacing the Brake Pads Step by Step : 1 Loosen the lug nuts on the wheels with the tire iron. Lift the vehicle with a lifting jack, place jack stands beneath the frame of the vehicle, remove the lug nuts then pull the wheels from the wheel bolts. 2 Remove the caliper bolts with a 13 mm wrench. The caliper is the metal apparatus that surrounds a portion of the braking rotor. It contains the brake pads and the caliper pistons that force the pads into contact with the rotor during braking. The two caliper bolts are on the inside wall of the caliper, the side closest to the frame of the vehicle. 3 Pull the caliper away from the rotor. Remove the brake pads from the inside walls of the caliper. Depending on the vehicle, you may need to use a flat head screwdriver to disengage the thin metal clips that hold the brake pads to the caliper. Other vehicles will simply require you to slide the brake pads from the sides of the caliper by hand. 4 Open the hood of the vehicle and locate the master cylinder; it is usually near the windshield on either the driver's or passenger's side. Remove the cap from the master cylinder. 5 Place the C-clamp around the caliper piston and the outside wall of the caliper. Twist the C-clamp, forcing the caliper piston against the side of the caliper. 6 Place the new brake pads onto the walls of the caliper. Replacing the Rotor Step by Step : 1 Pull the rotor from the wheel bolts on the vehicle. If the rotor is stuck to the wheel bolts, spray the wheel bolts and the rotor surface with chain lubricant. Spray one rotor and attempt to remove the other rotor while the chain lubricant works to relieve the bond. If the rotor is still stuck to the steering knuckle, use a hammer to tap on the back side of the rotor until it is free from the wheel bolts. 2 Remove the new rotor from its packaging. Spray the entire rotor with brake cleaner. Remove the brake cleaner and packing oil from the surface of the rotor with a clean towel. 3 Place the new rotor onto the wheel bolts. Make sure that the top hat section is facing outward (the top hat section is the side of the rotor with a protruding ring in the center). 4 Place the caliper with the new pads around the new rotor. Replace the caliper bolts with the 13 mm wrench. 5 Replace the wheel onto the wheel bolts and screw on the lug nuts by hand. Lift the vehicle with a lifting jack, remove the jack stands and lower the vehicle to the ground. Tighten the lug nuts with the tire iron. Tips & Warnings After the brake pads in the rotor have been changed, you will need to replenish the brake fluid that was expelled when you opened the caliper piston. Press the brake pedal slowly and hold it down for 10 seconds. Repeat this three times then fill the master cylinder with brake fluid appropriate for your vehicle. The coolant recovery system A coolant recovery system is just a clear plastic container with two little hoses coming out of the cap (see Figure 8-2). One hose leads to the radiator, and the other serves as an overflow pipe for the container. The container holds an extra supply of water and coolant, in case the system loses any. When your cooling system heats up and starts to overflow, the liquid pours back into the recovery container instead of pouring out of the radiator overflow pipe and onto the ground. When the system cools off, the pressure drops and the liquid is drawn out of the container and back into the radiator. The coolant recovery system A coolant recovery system is just a clear plastic container with two little hoses coming out of the cap (see Figure 8-2). One hose leads to the radiator, and the other serves as an overflow pipe for the container. The container holds an extra supply of water and coolant, in case the system loses any. When your cooling system heats up and starts to overflow, the liquid pours back into the recovery container instead of pouring out of the radiator overflow pipe and onto the ground. When the system cools off, the pressure drops and the liquid is drawn out of the container and back into the radiator. This process not only saves you coolant, but it also protects animals and children from sampling puddles of the toxic stuff. 162 Part II: What Makes It Go? Figure 8-2: A coolant recovery system. |
